The February Taste Test

Kenya Gethumbwini Taste Test
by Amanda Thompson

Having spent the whole of January supping on my favourite green tea with citrus & detoxifying after the festive period, I jumped at the chance to participate in this month’s taste test – Coffee! This month were all about perking back up after the winter blues and as a former member of our Beverages division, where I spent 5 years perfecting my cappuccino to the very last chocolate sprinkle , it seems like the perfect opportunity to get back to the bean! Kenya Gethumbwini coffee beans are grade AA 100% pure Arabica and have been compared to a full bodied red wine (so you can see why I’ve picked this one to taste!) I ground the beans to a cafetiere grind and used 1 generously heaped tbsp. of coffee for my 3 cup cafetiere. I left the coffee to brew for approx. 4 minutes and the water turned a medium – light shade of brown. I usually prefer a strong, dark coffee so I thought it was going to be a little too weak. However, it didn’t need the strength. The flavour was rich but unexpectedly tangy, filling my mouth with a smooth overall feel and hints of berries. A roller-coaster of flavours.

Verdict: Full bodied and rich teamed with the punchy tangs makes this an extra special drinking experience and I can see where it gets its red wine comparison from – definitely a must try if you haven’t already.
