Went with Mr Lloyd to Gourepore to visit Barry and Co’s Jute Mills. They have two mills, one employing 5,000 hands and the other 7,000. We saw the process of manufacture which resembles that of cloth in Leeds and district, only the machines used for jute are stronger than those used in the manufacture of cloth. We then went on to the Oil Mills and witnessed the process of extracting oil from Linseed. The oil is used by Paint Makers and Printing Ink Manufacturers and the residue is used for making feeding cakes for cattle. Had lunch and tea with the Lloyds and then returned to Calcutta for dinner, then to bed very tired after the late night yesterday.
