A motor drive to the Deserted City of Fatehpur Sikri – a fort built of red stone – 1569-86 by Akbar the greatest of all the Mogul Emperors. Has a mosque and palace within its grounds and a beautiful marble tomb with carved trellising which looks like lace at a distance. Here also is the largest arch in the world – Bulaud Dorwaza – The Horseshoe Gate. The fort took many thousands of men 17 years to complete and was then deserted. The Emperor went back to Agra, exact reasons for desertion not known – some say owing to a shortage of water. We saw a dead pony on the road with dogs and vultures having a good feed – they are scavengers in these parts. We saw another diving feat. men jumped from the top of the Fort walls (eighty feet high) into a 30 feet deep tank, feet first. Quite cool here to-day – feel much better and things appear to be more interesting than for the last few days. leave for Jaipur at 6:30pm and arrive early next morning.
