This very special Ceylon tea from the distinguished tea estate Vithanakande is renowned for the purity of flavour as it is only cultivated in the rarest of clear air environments. A Scotsman named James Taylor first planted 19 acres of tea bushes in Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was known then) back in 1867 and since then Ceylon tea is known and honoured around the world for its fine and pure teas. Ringtons Rare Authentic Golden Monkey 50g

Our Authentic Golden Monkey (Jin Mao Hou) comes from Fuan county, Fujian province and is named after the appearance of the leaves. Only the bud and first leaf are picked, and the tea leaves are characterized by the pale gold threading which resembles monkey fur. After careful picking these highly prized leaves are subject to a complex rolling and shaping process known as Gongfu.

The result is a rich flavour with hints of fruitiness and caramel, and an underlying sweetness, with no bitterness or astringency.

This is a very rare tea from Yunnan comprising only delicate golden buds. It is produced in Mannong, on Hekai Mountain, one of the world’s most ancient tea cultivation areas. Initially processed similarly to a green tea, a second oxidation stage is added, during which time the golden colour and sweet flavours develop. This tea is always made in small quantities because it is so difficult to produce and rarely available.

This tea is pale and mellow, with a sweet flavour that has hints of apricot and pear.

Ringtons Rare Premium Japanese Gyokuro 50g

Gyokuro which translates to 'jewel dew' is recognised as one of the finest green teas in the world. Its name refers to the pale green colour of the infusion. Gyokuro differs from the standard 'sencha' in being grown under the shade rather than the full sun.

The leaves which make our premium Gyokuro are shielded from the sun for at least two weeks before being harvested: this causes the amino acids and caffeine in the tea leaves to increase, which yields a sweet flavour.

These pearls are made using small leaves from white tea bushes in Fuding a mountainous region with a good deal of seacoast on Fujian's border with Zhejiang province. The tightly rolled balls are repeatedly scented with fresh jasmine blossoms which creates the appealing fragrance. The leaves will unfurl when they are infused, and can be re-infused many times. The attractive nature of this tea is best appreciated in tall glasses or shallow white drinking bowls that show off the leaves at their best.

Pale in colour with a delicate flavour and pronounced jasmine aroma.

Ringtons Rare Yunnan White Dragon 50g

This unusual tea shares characteristics of white and green tea in both appearance and flavour: its large white shoots are reminiscent of Silver Needle Pekoe which sit amongst the greener leaves. This tea is from Yunnan, where the leaves are naturally larger, and the downy buds are very prominent. The leaves were harvested during the last frosts at the start of spring, then simply seared in a wok and dried.

The flavour is very mild and mellow, closer to a white tea but with recognisable green tea character.

Ringtons Rare Iron Goddess Oolong (Tie Guanyan) 50g

This Tie Guan Yin is a premium variety of Chinese Oolong tea which originated in the 19 century. Processed using traditional techniques in a small village high in the mountains of Anxi County, Fujian Province, the leaves are in tightly rolled balls which unfurl when the tea is infused.

Distinct for its pale colour and orchid-like fragrance, this tea has a velvety mouth feel and a lingering aftertaste. Pour the first infusion quickly and then repeat up to eight times.

These tea leaves come from a garden very close to Darjeeling town which has the only original small-leaved Chinese variety of bushes planted by the British over 100 years ago. This means relatively low yields but exceptional flavour.

The infused tea has a light amber colour, with a little more strength and less greenness than many First Flush teas. It has some dryness on the palate and good muscatel flavour, with a subtle sweetness in the aftertaste.
